//Windlesham Sports Centre awarded highly commended in Sussex Heritage Trust Awards!

Windlesham House School’s new state-of-the-art sports complex was given ‘Highly Commended’ at the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards.

The Judges of the award commented that the sports complex was “Sensitively designed pool and sports facility in a treasured and historic site.  Child friendly design for the most part, which enhanced the project.”

The new complex (recently opened by 5 times Olympian Mark Foster) has a 25 meter pool with 6 lanes.  It features the latest energy saving technology and water filtration system and is acoustically ahead of its time. The sports hall accommodates hockey, netball, tennis, football and badminton with both the swimming pool and sports hall having generous viewing galleries.  This development enables the school to expand and develop its sporting curriculum and increase their programme of sports camps for children within the wider community. Windlesham are working with partners, schools, clubs and associations in the community to ensure everyone gets to enjoy these amazing facilities.

Windlesham House School is regarded as one of the leading independent co-educational Prep schools globally. Set within extensive grounds and playing fields of 65 acres it educates approximately 350 pupils. The new Swimming Pool and Sports Hall is located near the main Grade II Listed building nestled in The South Downs National Park. Windlesham prides its elf on its innovation but equally does not undertake new development lightly. Conscious of its exceptional site the School was particularly mindful that over intensification of building or the construction of buildings without regard to quality could destroy the intrinsic beauty. The design of the sports complex included two types of ‘green’ roof which have been turfed and sown with both sedum and a wild flower mix to reflect the native species of the chalk Downland. The school strives to set a high example within the community and to its stakeholders and is mindful of the paramount importance of sustainability and quality of materials.

This is a Landmark year for Windlesham who celebrated their 180th anniversary and 50 years of being the first Co-Ed Prep School – leading the way then and now.

Richard Foster, Headmaster, comments: ‘We are immensely proud of this award.  Our new Sports Complex is going to be a long-lasting legacy for current and future generations of Windlesham pupils and the local community.  I am delighted that the architect, Victoria Holland, has gained the recognition she deserves’.

Victoria Holland, the architect behind this comments: ‘It has been a great privilege to be involved with a project which has been able to deliver unsurpassed swimming and sports facilities to both the children of Windlesham House School as well as to those within the wider community.
As a practice, we are also grateful to the South Downs National Park Authority for their support and vision during the planning process’.
