Year 8 enjoyed a fascinating geography field trip to visit our neighbours at Wiston Estate. The children were engaged, thoughtful and curious throughout the day as they explored a range of geographical and environmental topics.
During the first part of the visit, Richard guided the group around the estate, discussing issues ranging from global farming challenges and the impact of the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm to the remarkable journey of swallows as they prepare for their annual migration to warmer climates. The pupils asked insightful questions and demonstrated a keen interest in the connections between the local landscape and wider global issues.
In the second session, Kirsty explained why the chalk downland surrounding Wiston provides the ideal conditions for growing vines. The children learned that this year’s warm and sunny weather had created excellent growing conditions for the grapes, leading to an earlier-than-usual harvest.
The group was then given a tour of the winery, where they saw the impressive French grape press and learned about the fermentation process that transforms grape juice into sparkling wine. While they were not able to sample the finished product, they did enjoy the opportunity to seek out and taste grapes straight from the vines.
The children were impeccably behaved throughout the visit and showed great enthusiasm for their learning, making detailed notes to support their geography diploma projects. Richard and Kirsty both commented on how much they enjoy hosting Windlesham pupils and were particularly impressed by the curiosity and thoughtful questions of Bosco, Philo and Tommy, who deserve special recognition.
It was a valuable and memorable experience, giving the children the opportunity to see geography in action and deepen their understanding of the relationship between people, industry and the environment.
