What is boarding really like? For many families it is the part of school life they are most curious about, and sometimes the most unsure of. At Windlesham House, a boarding school in West Sussex set in 70 acres of the South Downs near Pulborough, boarding is warm, busy and full of life. Here is how a typical day might unfold.
What are mornings like for boarders?
Mornings begin gently. Boarders wake in comfortable, homely houses, get ready for the day and head down together for a proper breakfast. There is a friendly buzz as children swap plans for the day ahead. Because everything is on one site, surrounded by beautiful countryside, there is no long commute, just a short walk across the grounds to the start of lessons.
What happens during the school day?
The school day is shared by day pupils and boarders alike, so everyone learns and plays side by side. Lessons are lively and purposeful, with small classes that let teachers give every child real attention. Between lessons there is time to breathe, whether that is a game outdoors, a visit to the market garden or simply catching up with friends. Three freshly prepared meals a day, plus snacks and fruit at break, keep everyone going.
What do boarders do after lessons?
This is where boarding really comes into its own. Once lessons finish, the day creates more opportunities. Children might take to the nine-hole golf course, dive into the 25-metre indoor pool, head to forest school, rehearse for a production or lose themselves in a favourite club or hobby. There is a calm, supervised time for prep, so homework is done and dusted before home time would even begin for a day pupil. Evenings bring a chance to relax with friends, read, play games and wind down, all with caring house staff close by.
What about weekends?
Weekends are a highlight. Our Saturday enrichment programme offers a wide range of activities, and there is plenty of space and freedom to explore, compete, create and simply have fun.
