There is something special about the start of a new school year. New shoes, a fresh pencil case, and that familiar mix of excitement and nerves as children step back through the gates. At Windlesham House, our prep school in West Sussex set within 70 acres of the South Downs near Pulborough, the autumn term is one of our favourite times of year. If your child is joining us for the first time, or simply returning after a long summer, here is what the first term has in store.
What happens in the first few days?
The first few days are all about settling in and feeling at home. New children are paired with friendly faces, shown around the grounds and helped to find their feet, from the classrooms to the dining hall to the playing fields. Our staff take the time to get to know each child as an individual, because children learn best when they feel known and secure. There is no rush. We would far rather a child felt happy and confident than hurried into the term.
How do you help children settle in?
Settling in looks a little different for everyone. Some children arrive brimming with confidence; others need a gentle week or two to find their rhythm. Small class sizes mean our teachers can give each child the attention they need, and our pastoral team keeps a caring eye on how everyone is getting on. For boarders, house staff make the boarding houses feel like a home from home, with familiar routines, good food and plenty of time to make friends. If ever a child finds something tricky, we notice, and we help.
What does a typical week look like?
A week at Windlesham House is wonderfully full. Alongside a broad and engaging academic curriculum, children enjoy sport, music, drama and art, and have the run of our extraordinary grounds. Our nine-hole golf course, 25-metre indoor swimming pool and forest school all become part of everyday learning. Most of our co-curricular clubs and our popular Saturday enrichment programme are included, so there is always something new to try, whether that is a new sport, a musical instrument or a role in the school play.
How can parents help their child settle?
A few simple things make a real difference. Keeping to a steady bedtime and morning routine helps children arrive ready for the day. Talking positively about school and letting little worries be aired without making too much of them, gives children confidence. And staying in touch with us matters most of all. If something is on your mind, or your child’s, please tell us early. We are partners in your child’s happiness, and the sooner we know, the sooner we can help.
