Windlesham welcomes children from around the world. Through our EAL programme, we aim to improve English skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) and systems (lexis, pronunciation, grammar and discourse) for our overseas pupils.
It is very important to us that children who come to the school from a non-English speaking background start to communicate as soon as possible. This happens quickly, as children make friends and join in Windlesham House life. We work on improving grammatical accuracy as the children gain confidence with fluency, and our goal is for each child to function happily in classroom and social situations.
Vibrant and inspiring lessons motivate the children, with specifically tailored tasks and activities to reinforce learning.
Our EAL teaching is delivered by specialist teachers through bespoke one to one lessons, small group sessions and in class lesson support using individual learning plans to respond specifically to each child’s needs. This gives children the opportunity to flourish in a nurturing and caring environment where they can obtain extra support and develop their English skills with confidence.
Our EAL teachers work closely with all subject teachers to monitor EAL learners ensuring they can fully access the curriculum and gain necessary subject specific support where necessary. As children progress through Windlesham House, the EAL department can assist further by providing support for internal and external exams as well as Cambridge ESOL exams.
To complement traditional learning methods, we organise cultural trips and experiences. This exposure to British life helps children to apply language skills and gain a deeper cultural understanding of their environment. From visiting museums and nature spots, to watching shows and playing sport, children at Windlesham House are introduced to new experiences which enhances their understanding and imbed language skills and knowledge.
