Where is Windlesham House School located?

Windlesham House School is nestled in the heart of the South Downs National Park in West Sussex, just over an hour from London. Our magnificent seventy-acre estate sits on the site of the historic Windlesham House, surrounded by rolling countryside, ancient woodland and stunning natural beauty.

The school is easily accessible from Brighton, Worthing, Chichester and London, making it an ideal choice for both day pupils and boarders. Our private estate setting provides a safe, inspiring environment where children can learn, play and grow surrounded by nature.

Our location within the South Downs National Park gives pupils daily access to one of England’s most beautiful landscapes. The rolling hills, woodland and open spaces become an extension of our classroom, supporting outdoor learning, forest school activities and a genuine connection with nature.

How has Windlesham House evolved since 1837?

Windlesham House School was established in 1837, making us the oldest prep school in the country. For nearly two centuries, we have been at the forefront of preparatory education, constantly evolving to meet the needs of each new generation while maintaining our commitment to academic excellence and pastoral care.

Pioneering spirit

Throughout our history, Windlesham House has been a pioneer in independent education. We were among the first prep schools to embrace co-education, welcoming girls in 1967. This forward-thinking approach has always been part of our character, honouring tradition while having the courage to innovate.

Our decision not to have a school uniform, introduced to help boarding pupils feel more at home, reflects our understanding that children thrive when they feel comfortable and can express their individuality. This distinctive choice has become one of our defining features.

Who leads the school and what is their vision?

Windlesham House School is led by Ben Evans, our Head, who joined the school with a clear vision for combining academic excellence with outstanding pastoral care and a rich co-curricular programme.

Under Ben’s leadership, the school continues to build on its distinguished heritage while embracing innovation in teaching and learning. His vision centres on developing confident, independent young people who are prepared not just for their next school but for life in an ever-changing world.

Supporting the Head is an experienced senior leadership team, including the senior deputy head, the deputy head (academic), deputy head (pastoral) and head of pre-prep. Together, they ensure that every aspect of school life reflects our values and maintains the highest standards.

What role does the chapel play in school life?

The Windlesham House chapel is at the heart of our school community. While we welcome families of all faiths and none, the chapel provides a beautiful, peaceful space for reflection, celebration and coming together as a community.

Community gatherings

We hold regular assemblies in the chapel where we celebrate achievements, share stories and reinforce our school values. These gatherings help create a strong sense of community and belonging, allowing children to reflect on their experiences and learn from one another.

Special occasions

Throughout the year, the chapel hosts special services and concerts, from our Christmas carol service to end-of-term celebrations. These occasions bring together pupils, staff and families in a space that has witnessed generations of Windlesham House children growing and flourishing.
