Bringing science to life in the classroom

Science is brought to life through hands-on, practical experiences that inspire curiosity and a love for discovery. From Year 3 onwards, pupils learn in one of our four fully equipped science labs, giving them access to specialist facilities and resources from an early age. Our beautiful school grounds also provide a wealth of opportunities for outdoor learning, ensuring that science is both engaging and relevant to our pupils’ lives.

Science feeds a child's natural curiosity

We believe that the best way to learn science is by doing it. Whether they are investigating forces, growing plants, or exploring chemical reactions, our pupils are encouraged to think like scientists—making predictions, testing hypotheses, and drawing conclusions based on evidence. Our approach nurtures not only scientific understanding but also key skills such as collaboration, communication, and problem-solving.

Science at Windlesham House extends well beyond the classroom. Our exciting programme of trips enhances learning at every stage:

  • Year 5 visit Marwell Zoo, where they explore animal adaptations and conservation
  • Year 6 enjoy a trip to the Winchester Science Centre, bringing physics and engineering to life with interactive exhibits
  • Year 7 head to WWT Arundel, studying ecosystems and biodiversity first hand
  • Year 8 experience a mobile planetarium and space morning, deepening their understanding of astronomy and the universe

In addition, our Year 7 science showcase gives pupils the opportunity to present their own scientific investigations, developing their confidence in explaining their methods and findings to an audience. This event highlights the importance of scientific communication and teamwork—essential skills that will support their future learning.

Our new diploma programme further reinforces these skills, ensuring that pupils are fully prepared for their senior school science journey. With a strong emphasis on practical investigations, critical thinking, and independent research, we equip our pupils with the scientific knowledge and skills they need to succeed.

At Windlesham House, science is more than just a subject—it’s an adventure in discovery, preparing pupils for a future of innovation, exploration, and informed decision-making.
