Short Stay Programme 2019

In order to best accommodate the needs of your child, we have set up a uniquely tailored programme for them for the last 4 weeks of the summer term at Windlesham. The course is for children aged 8 to 11 in (National Curriculum) Years 4, 5, 6 and 7. The children will be in one of two ESOL (English For Speakers of Other Languages) classes, split by age. These ESOL classes will provide at least 15 hours each week of classroom learning time in all aspects of the English language – reading, writing, listening, speaking, pronunciation, grammar, lexis and discourse.

We aim to improve levels of spoken and written English by facilitating communicative and interactive lessons. Children will have ample opportunity to build upon their existing knowledge and to practise the receptive and productive skills which make up written and spoken communication. The learning atmosphere is very important and we aim to provide classes where children can be focused and relaxed in order to achieve optimum success. Our lessons are planned to respond to the needs of visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners, and are pitched so that we can extend the more able learners and support those who are new to the language.

Our working day would typically include some kind of grammatical presentation and practice, a reading or listening comprehension, communicative activities such as role play, problem-solving exercises, a pronunciation or lexical workshop and a text-based element – précising a story, writing a report etc. We vary the tone, pitch and focus of our lessons with plenty of time to revise and practise new structures, functions and vocabulary.

The children will also benefit from lessons delivered by other practitioners (in English) for example: cookery, outdoor education, art, swimming and ICT. There will be trips to local places of interest looking at history, science, sport, nature and wildlife, and these topics and will form the basis of the project work.

Of course, we realise how important it is for your child to integrate with our current pupils and, to this end for the rest of the day they will join our permanent pupils for games, activities, meals, free time and dorm time. Where appropriate they will also take part in mainstream lessons for example PE, Music and ICT.

There will be ample opportunity for your child to form friendships and enjoy all that Windlesham has
to offer!
