“The moment we persuade a child, any child, to cross that threshold, that magic threshold into a library, we change their lives forever, for the better. ” Barack Obama

The Windlesham Library

Windlesham believes that reading and a love of books is at the heart of a good education. The Library exists to encourage a love of reading for pleasure, by involving and inspiring the children with a steady flow of good new books and stimulating reading initiatives.

The Library aims to support the curriculum with a wealth of current and accessible reference and non-fiction titles, periodicals, and selected internet sites. The Library also helps children to develop their research, information-handling and study skills and helps to promote independent learning. Staff are encouraged to use the Library resources as part of their teaching programmes.

The purpose of the Library is also to familiarise children with using a library so that they have the appropriate library skills when they reach their senior schools. The Library provides daily news via national and local newspapers and a TV screen that transmits news as it happens, both globally and within school.

The new Windlesham Library opened in September 2009 (and was officially opened by the Children’s Laureate, Anthony Browne, the following month) and is situated at the heart of the School, with easy access via two entrances from classrooms and dormitories. It is open every day, all day, so that children can use it at any time for reading for pleasure, research or studying.

There are two distinct spaces – fiction and non-fiction, clearly signposted and distinctively furnished to reflect either an area for reading for pleasure or a study area. There is also an area for younger children with a colourful rug and smaller easy chairs that are used by the Juniors and Little Windlesham.
