Girls @ K2 in Crawley – Monday 20th June

Boys @ Hurst College – Friday 24th June

18 Windlesham girls ranging from Transition to the Ones competed on Monday the County Athletics Championships at the K2 in Crawley.

Ranging from experienced campaigners to near novices, all the girls gave of their best in what was an exciting climax to another successful season of athletics at Windlesham.  While every girl did themselves proud and wore the smart new Windlesham athletics kit with honour there were some particular achievements of note.

Lexie Spurr got the day off to a great start with victory in the U10 High Jump to become county champion, closely followed by Varvara Soloveva in the 800m and Florence Margaroli who was just outside the County record in the 300m.

With qualification for the Nationals in Birmingham up for grabs for any athlete in the Ones, Twos or Threes, all the Windlesham girls were striving for a top two finish.  Jenny Mbu (U14 Shot), Abby Gilchrist (U14 Triple Jump), Esther Banks (U13 Long Jump) and Ellie Kennedy (70m Hurdles) all

joined Flo and Varvara in booking their tickets to Birmingham.  There were near misses and worthy

3rd place finishes for Lily Margaroli in High Jump and Becx Radford in both Hurdles and 200m.

However the last word was left to our U12 Girls’ 4 x 100 Relay team of Ellie and Varvara joined by

Ally Bayne and Poppy Clark.  Showing that hard work and determination really do pay dividends, the girls won a tough heat before edging out tough competition in a thrilling final to finish second behind Westbourne and become the first junior relay team in recent memory to make it to Birmingham.

Inspired by the girls, the 26 strong boys’ squad arrived at Hurst on Friday optimistic but realising that the pressure was well and truly on.  With the Windlesham hurdling and High Jump academy once again coming up trumps, the day got off to a bright start.  Hamish Milne-Skillman was first to make his mark with victory in the U11 High Jump with a leap of 1.24m.  The hurdles saw 3rds for Hugh Cholmondeley (U13) and Caspar Milne (U11), 2nd for Henry Cholmondeley (U12) and 1st in one of the most exciting races of the day for captain Henry Martin.

Sam Williams lead the way in the throwing department winning the U12 Shot Putt and finishing

second in the javelin, setting two new Windlesham school records in the process – a phenomenal effort.  Charlie Goldstone also excelled himself finishing in 3rd in the U14 Shot, breaking his Personal Best by almost a metre.

Once again, every Windlesham boy did themselves proud, competing with ferocious determination, camaraderie and a great sense of fun.  More than anyone however this day belonged to Henry Martin.  After National gold (high jump) and silver (Hurdles and 200m) in the last two years, Henry had already marked himself out as an athlete of rare promise.  After his victory in the Hurdles, Henry went on to claim a second gold in the 200m, before completing a unique treble with a county record breaking leap of 1.61m in the U14 High Jump.  These achievements earned Henry the prestigious ‘William Griffiths’ award for athlete of the day.

A Windlesham record of 12 athletes will be competing at the Nationals in Birmingham on Monday 4th July.  I’m sure we would all like to wish them the best of luck.

I took six boys from the senior tennis team to Wimbledon on Tuesday for the day and I must say we were spoilt rotten with the quality of tennis and the weather ! With two tickets for centre court, the schedule was impressive with Serena Williams up first having had a dreadful year due to illness and injury. Roger Federer came on after Serena and finally Djokovic played against the Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. The boys were fortunate enough to be seated close to the royal box where many of the current England cricketers were sitting which caused even more excitement. On the outside courts there were many superb men’s and ladies matches being played, many of which went to five sets. James de Winton managed to get plenty of autographs on his extra- large tennis ball !

I must say the boys behaved beautifully throughout the day. Several ladies on centre court commented on how polite the boys were.

We returned home at 9:15pm on a real high, what a day !

Boys: J. de Winton, C. Croneborg, J. Olszowski, G. Montojo, H. Lewis, M. Burrows

Windlesham  became champions of the IAPS Golf Championship, an annual tournament held this year on Friday 10th June at the prestigious Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club.  The venue has hosted 10 Opens, 2 Ryder Cups and will be hosting the British Open next year. Over 90 children from prep schools all over the country were competing in this year’s tournament.

The 18 hole competition started well, the rain had subsided and the sun shone as the Windlesham team headed out.

Windlesham’s Gonzalo Montojo (age 12) had a blistering level par round and stormed to victory with 4 shots clear of a 94 strong field of children from all over Brittan and Ireland.

Ganzalo said, “This is the best I have ever played”, his score included a double bogey on one hole.  Gonzalo has a great golfing future and dreams of following in the footsteps of the legendry Seve Ballesteros.  Ganzalo was awarded the cup by the Captain of Royal Lytham.

The Windlehsam girls’ team who included Lily Margaroli (age 11), Ana Montojo (age10) and Flo Margoroli (13) were the winners of the Girls Team Trophy with a combined total of 83 points.  Windlesham were level with the Fettes team from Scotland but won on a back nine.

The Boys Team Gonzalo Montogo, Claes Croneborg, and Charles Guy were leaders in the club house but were beaten into second place by the local Birkdale Team who were the last Team in.

The Headmaster of Windlesham Richard Foster  said, “I am absolutely thrilled that the girls and boys played so well and have won these trophies which is such a huge bonus this really has put Windlesham on the map in the world of golf.  All the children are  bursting with pride.”

The U8 cricket team had a superb afternoon playing in an U9 tournament at Hurst yesterday.  This very talented group of boys needed some experience playing against more accomplished cricketers and this tournament was the perfect opportunity.

With the tournament rules preparing the boys for Colts cricket it was a steep learning curve to play ‘once you’re out you’re out!’ but after the first games they soon adapted their attitudes!

We were put into a tough pool, playing Lancing Prep  and then the eventual overall tournament winners Cranleigh ‘A’ team.  We lost both these matches, the first by 26 runs and the second by only 4.

This put us into the Plate competition, where we faced Cumnor House ‘A’ team and then Cumnor House ‘B’ team!  We won both these matches comfortably with extra bonus points for scoring such a high number of runs and taking so many wickets.  We emerged victorious in the Plate competition and were presented with a lovely trophy for our efforts.  The whole afternoon was fantastic – it was a pleasure to spend the afternoon with the boys; they conducted themselves beautifully and were very sporting and positive of the play by their own team mates and the oppositions we faced.

On Wednesday 8th June teams from Kent, East & West Sussex, Surrey and the Isle of Wight came to our annual U10 rounders tournament.

A great afternoon of rounders was played in glorious sunshine albeit rather blustery conditions.

The winners of the 3 sections, Farlington, Windlesham and Our Lady of Sion, plus the highest placed runner up, Holmewood House, went through to play in the semi-finals with Holmewood House and Our Lady of Sion going through to meet in the final. A very close match saw a win by just half a rounder for Our Lady of  Sion.

“All our girls had a wonderful afternoon playing rounders in such beautiful surroundings. After their narrow victory over Windlesham in the semi finals they were so grateful to your U10 team for supporting them in the finals. The parents and children all commented that the team from Windlesham were such good sports to cheer for a visiting team so enthusiastically.”  Tammy Casey,  Our Lady of Sion.
