Girls @ K2 in Crawley – Monday 20th June
Boys @ Hurst College – Friday 24th June
18 Windlesham girls ranging from Transition to the Ones competed on Monday the County Athletics Championships at the K2 in Crawley.
Ranging from experienced campaigners to near novices, all the girls gave of their best in what was an exciting climax to another successful season of athletics at Windlesham. While every girl did themselves proud and wore the smart new Windlesham athletics kit with honour there were some particular achievements of note.
Lexie Spurr got the day off to a great start with victory in the U10 High Jump to become county champion, closely followed by Varvara Soloveva in the 800m and Florence Margaroli who was just outside the County record in the 300m.
With qualification for the Nationals in Birmingham up for grabs for any athlete in the Ones, Twos or Threes, all the Windlesham girls were striving for a top two finish. Jenny Mbu (U14 Shot), Abby Gilchrist (U14 Triple Jump), Esther Banks (U13 Long Jump) and Ellie Kennedy (70m Hurdles) all
joined Flo and Varvara in booking their tickets to Birmingham. There were near misses and worthy
3rd place finishes for Lily Margaroli in High Jump and Becx Radford in both Hurdles and 200m.
However the last word was left to our U12 Girls’ 4 x 100 Relay team of Ellie and Varvara joined by
Ally Bayne and Poppy Clark. Showing that hard work and determination really do pay dividends, the girls won a tough heat before edging out tough competition in a thrilling final to finish second behind Westbourne and become the first junior relay team in recent memory to make it to Birmingham.
Inspired by the girls, the 26 strong boys’ squad arrived at Hurst on Friday optimistic but realising that the pressure was well and truly on. With the Windlesham hurdling and High Jump academy once again coming up trumps, the day got off to a bright start. Hamish Milne-Skillman was first to make his mark with victory in the U11 High Jump with a leap of 1.24m. The hurdles saw 3rds for Hugh Cholmondeley (U13) and Caspar Milne (U11), 2nd for Henry Cholmondeley (U12) and 1st in one of the most exciting races of the day for captain Henry Martin.
Sam Williams lead the way in the throwing department winning the U12 Shot Putt and finishing
second in the javelin, setting two new Windlesham school records in the process – a phenomenal effort. Charlie Goldstone also excelled himself finishing in 3rd in the U14 Shot, breaking his Personal Best by almost a metre.
Once again, every Windlesham boy did themselves proud, competing with ferocious determination, camaraderie and a great sense of fun. More than anyone however this day belonged to Henry Martin. After National gold (high jump) and silver (Hurdles and 200m) in the last two years, Henry had already marked himself out as an athlete of rare promise. After his victory in the Hurdles, Henry went on to claim a second gold in the 200m, before completing a unique treble with a county record breaking leap of 1.61m in the U14 High Jump. These achievements earned Henry the prestigious ‘William Griffiths’ award for athlete of the day.
A Windlesham record of 12 athletes will be competing at the Nationals in Birmingham on Monday 4th July. I’m sure we would all like to wish them the best of luck.
