Windlesham’s U13 Rugby players have had one of their best seasons on record, winning 23 out of 25 fixtures since Christmas, victory in the prestigious Windlesham 7s Tournament for the first time in 33 years and finishing as runners-up in the County Cup Final in the most breath-taking of finals.

The County Cup Final at Worthing Rugby Club pitted Windlesham against a powerful and experienced Hurst. With Hurst scoring two early tries it could have been a very one-sided affair, but the never-say-die spirit of Windlesham helped them to claw their way back into the game, Scrum-Half Henry de Klee going over for a try on the stroke of half-time. The second half saw both teams defend with tenacity and resilience.
The 7s season proved even more successful, Windlesham winning 11 out of 12 games to finish as runners-up of the Yardley Court tournament in Tonbridge and then winners of their own Windlesham 7s for the first time in 33 years.
With 29 wins from 34 matches in all competitions, this season will go down as one of the strongest in Windlesham history. Henry Martin, with 76 tries, was the outstanding player on the pitch in every match.

The Twos trip to Herstmonceux Science Centre was both very educational and enjoyable. It gave the year group a chance to interact with lots of science related topics such as forces, sound and light. During the day the Twos learned a lot about science.
Firstly there was a water exhibit, with mini boats, damns, turbines and pipes to interact with. Then there was a medieval machines’ room with a joust simulation, a small trebuchet, mills and many other exhibits. Next to that was the forces’ exhibit, with magnetic force, vacuums, and others. There were also sound and light exhibitions and an adventure playground, including several large, interactive exhibits like Archimedes Screw, an 8-person balance board and satellite communication.
Later, in the afternoon, we saw a very amusing chemistry show as it is the International Year of Chemistry. In the great spirit of this subject, nearly every experiment involved an explosion! Everyone had a great day and I recommend this location for the future.

Our friends from the Théâtre sans Frontières delivered a great performance for the Ones, Twos, Threes and Fours. The play was entitled ‘Les Aventures de Lapin’, and was set on an idyllic desert island in the Caribbean. The story followed Mademoiselle Christelle and her four-footed friends, Lapin, Eléphant and Cheval who were each seeking to become her chosen husband. The children joined in the actions and the singing and they certainly loved the show and most importantly, they learnt some French in the process.
Three children went to Haileybury School to compete in Haileybury’s annual Design Technology challenge. Ludo Trott, Felix Bailey and Henry Cholmondeley were challenged to solve three different problems all based around polar exploration. They built a K’nex Snow Buggy, before designing and building a Crane to lift hoards of fish through a hole in the ice. Finally they had to develop a way of sending a snowball across the room the furthest. All of the challenges asked the children to work as a team and demonstrate good problem solving skills as well as teamwork. The children learnt a great deal and had really enjoyed the experience of being in such an inspiring environment.
Windlesham loves to perform. From beginners at lunchtime concerts to advanced students preparing for scholarships. On Sunday 20th March in St Nicholas Church, Arundel and on Tuesday 22nd March in Chelsea Old Church, our three choirs prepared a suite of pieces by Director of Music, Anthony Hutchings. Entitled ‘Devotion’, the performance was a celebration of ‘Grace and Spirit’; drawing on texts from the New Testament, Medieval poems, a poem by Miss Clark and a Masai blessing which was introduced to the school by Mr Foster. The performances brought together many different areas of school life. The performance by Senior Choir, Junior Choir and Chapel Choir was accompanied by 3 African marimbas (surely the only prep school in the UK to have these), two flutes played by members of the music team, organ, soprano saxophone, clarinet and electric piano. A clarinet solo was performed by Head of Maths, Julian Franklin. Other soloists included Assistant Head of Music – Kate Eels, Iona Anderson, Rebecca Nielsen and Theo Golden. Integral to the performance was Anthony Hutchings’ very sophisticated use of surround sound and computers with atmospheric LED lighting.
The churches on both occasions were full and the concerts were thoroughly enjoyed by performers and audience.
On Friday 18th March and Saturday 19th March, 72 members of the Threes and Fours treated us to their interpretation of Tom Stoppard’s surreal ‘masterpiece’ After Magritte.
The play opened with a piece of devised physical theatre, set to original music composed by Anthony Hutchings, inspired by the works of 20th century Belgian artist Rene Magritte. Accompanied by projections of these artworks, 61 children moved into shapes, swirled in spirals, manipulated bowler hats and announced the titles of the pieces, all with a very impressive level of maturity considering the highly advanced and abstract nature of the work.
We then moved into the bizarre narrative of how husband and wife, Reginald and Thelma Harris, are accused of the ‘Crippled Singer Caper’ by over eager Inspector Foot and Constable Holmes.
The very young cast coped wonderfully well with this hugely challenging piece that one would normally expect to see performed by much older students. George Hilton, George Augustin and Charlie Line characterised enthusiastically as the exasperated Harris and Ellie Kennedy and Juliette Carmichael both created nice moments of intelligent comedy as the very confused, tuba obsessed Mother. Emily Ind, Ellie Whiteside and Tishy Akroyd were all very engaging, charming and energetic as Thelma and Ludo Milne and Roman Kalinin coped well with some very challenging text and physical comedy as the bumbling and bumptious Inspector Foot. Christopher Albertyn used his face and voice beautifully as Constable Holmes and the whole cast worked very nicely together as an ensemble.
As Mrs Jenkins goes on her maternity leave, she warmly thanks all children and staff involved in this very advanced piece that once again saw our children accepting a huge challenge, rising to it and impressing us all.
