Our first ever chess tournament saw us compete with four prep schools  at both U11 and U9 level and our improving U11’s were too strong for the opposition.  Most of our players had very good tournaments. Ludo Milne’s career average shot up almost as much as Alasdair Cook’s in the recent Ashes cricket series as he won all six matches.  Christopher Albertyn had a marvellous day. Rory Law played well except for allowing a couple of stalemates!  Karim Marchoud and Teddy Maloney began to play with the sort of maturity they should do with their levels of experience now and Callum Owen and Hamish Heagerty played watchfully and learnt a lot too ahead of the IAPS chess.

On Friday 4th March the Threes were given an exciting medieval experience when they visited Rochester Castle and Cathedral for the day.  The children dressed as Pilgrims and Monks and learnt what life would have been like living and working in the Cathedral.  We were also given a special tour and learnt how to decode the past by looking at the design and decoration of one of the finest Norman Cathedrals in England.  The day was finished with a visit to the remains of Rochester’s square keep castle, and as we were visiting on the day that a major Hollywood production about the siege of Rochester Castle in 1215 was being released, called ‘Ironclad’, we shared our stay with news and film crews eager to uncover its secret past.

Windlesham sport blossomed in superb conditions on Tuesday, March 8th, as the boys won our  own U13 Rugby 7s Tournament for the first time in 27 years and the girls were runners’ up in the Hockey 7s, following some gritty performances in the early rounds.

There were 18  schools represented in the rugby and 12 in the hockey tournament from throughout Sussex and as far afield as Hampshire and Buckinghamshire.  Since the inaugural tournament in 1966, the day has always been a fantastic showcase for Prep school sport at its very best and draws large parental support, as well as keen interest from Senior Independent schools on talent spotting missions!

Rugby at Windlesham is on a high, with the 1st XV enjoying its most successful season for many years and the squad adapted their skills really well to produce some scintillating 7s rugby throughout the day. The overall standard was extremely high; Worth Abbey beat Shoreham College in the final of the Plate Competition that ran parallel with the Cup, following the qualifying stages. First-time entrants, Angmering, a local secondary school, powered their way through the qualifiers to reach the final, but came up against an in-form Windlesham squad who ran in four tries to lift the Bardolph Cup for the first time since 1984! Captain, Henry Martin, was also named Player-of-the-Day to round off a superb day for him and his squad who were unbeaten in all matches.

The Hockey 7s for U13 girls saw the Windlesham squad play some enterprising hockey to make it to the final against St Andrew’s, Eastbourne. In an exciting and hard-fought match St Andrew’s hung on to their 1-0 first half lead, despite a series of late raids by Windlesham into the opposition’s ‘D’.

To round off the winning feeling, both Windlesham and St Andrew’s will receive a complimentary set of Zeon team kit from Gordon Henry Sportswear based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

Every term at Windlesham, the Languages Department organises a lunchtime where all our bi-lingual children, and indeed any other keen and budding linguists, have the opportunity to join the Languages Department staff for lunch.

This year, we have bi-lingual children in Transition, Fives, Threes, Twos  and Ones.  We meet in the Girls Comfy room and discuss what we have been up to lately, whilst enjoying some “fromage”, “biscottes” and “Château de la Pompe” which is commonly known as water !

The “rendez-vous” has been so successful that we are often joined by other students who do not speak French fluently but want to be there to share the experience.  Additionally some other teachers, all keen Francophiles, have been keen to take part in the experience, and it is great to see a mix of age, culture and knowledge who get together on a regular basis to practice their “français”!
