WON   3 – 2 GOALS: C Sutton x2, Haines-Moss

HT (3– 0)

Windlesham U9 football team used the momentum gained in victory on Saturday to surge to a nail-biting 3-2 win away as Ashdown in the most exciting game of the season so far.

This was an end-to-end affair right from the off, full-blooded and tenacious defending from both teams countering attacking football that was full of pace and skill.  The opening exchanges saw the home team gain the upper hand in terms of territory and possession.  However, with Owen and Hatrick remaining resolute at the back, the black and whites always posed a threat on the break.  Both goalkeepers were in inspired form and the game remained deadlocked until five minutes before half time, when a precise through ball from Haines-Moss put Sutton in on goal, his calm and precise shot into the corner of the highest class.   Moments later an almost carbon-copy goal put Windlesham 2-0 up, Dismont-Robinson this time the provider.  And with Haines-Moss toe poking in a third on the stroke of half time after a mazy dribble and cross on the right from Sutton, the home side could be forgiven for feeling a little hard done by in what had been a very even half.

If this was the case, Ashdown turned it to their advantage as they came storming out of the blocks for the second stanza.  Windlesham perhaps slightly resting on their laurels soon found themselves pegged back to 3-2.  The final ten minutes was all action, edge-of-the-seat, thrill-a-minute football.  Harry Reed, playing his best game of the season, was instrumental in setting up some excellent chances, the Ashdown keeper proving equal to the task on each occasion.  Similarly at the other end, Jack Sayers produced a series of miraculous last ditch touches to keep the lead intact.   In the last move of the game the football gods confirmed that they were smiling on Windlesham, as the Ashdown captain dribbled through the whole Windlesham team before seeing his thunderous right foot shot canon back of the crossbar.

This was a really enjoyable and entertaining match where both sets of players displayed high levels of skill and ferocious commitment.  While neither side really deserved to lose, congratulations go to all the Windlesham players for holding their nerve to secure their third victory of the season.

Drew 2-2 Goal-scorers:  H Martin x 2

This was the first-ever football fixture between the schools and what a cracker! Within three minutes Windlesham had a penalty as Menendez was bundled off the ball in the area, which saw Henry Martin thump the spot-kick into the back of the net. Ashdown were very competitive and used the strong breeze to pump balls into Windlesham’s half, for their two terrier-like strikers to cause unease in our defence. Ashdown’s feistiness got to Windlesham who couldn’t get any passes or possession strung together. The game was played at a furious pace and Anthony Morris kept Windlesham in the game with four superb saves as Ashdown gained momentum. Just before half-time an Ashdown ‘long ball’ took a kind bounce for their striker to nip in between our defenders and put the home side 2-1 up.

The possession in the second half was more 50:50 and their ‘keeper was now tested from a number of good Windlesham attacking moves, but like Morris, he was on top of his game. With just six minutes to go and with the mighty U9s, as well as Mr Duncan supporting from the touchline, Hamish McLay set himself to take a free-kick just inside Ashdown’s half. With the precision of a Ryder Cup golfer, Hamish launched his kick with a bit of ‘draw’ and in a crowded penalty box, Henry Martin let the ball come over his left shoulder and slammed it (OK – shinned it!) into the back of the net to make it 2-2.

The remaining minutes were a feast of attacking and counter-attacking play, as both teams went for the win. The final whistle blew with all players gasping for air! After both ‘keepers were publicly praised and applauded for their efforts, there was a rousing ‘three cheers’, followed by an ‘unofficial’ penalty shoot-out, which Ashdown snuck 3-1.

A great afternoon’s football, followed by some exceedingly good cakes!

This was literally a game of two halves … Broadwater are a smaller school than ourselves and we played against their U11A team minus the best four players (who were in their U13 team playing our 2nd XI at Windlesham) for the first half. This was a cracking half, very competitive, quite skilful and we had certainly met our match. Both goalkeepers were actively involved, Christopher Albertyn, a former Broadwater pupil, making a number of fine catches and saves for us. Goals were exchanged as Broadwater scored first – a corner, into a crowded box, was poked into the corner of the net – but Tom Law ensured the lead only stood for five minutes as he took on a defender, beat him, and slotted the ball into the top corner. A classic goal!

Earl Cave and Tom Ibbitson shared the centre forward position and both played well – good to see some defence from you both when needed. Tom was very aware of players around him, good passing here, whilst Earl showed a particularly good first touch. Edward Pollard was everywhere, as ever – you certainly cover more ground in a match than anyone else. You deserve to be on the scoresheet a little more often, but you just need to be a little more composed in front of goal. Super defending from you today and you were always setting up the other players. Well done! We’d have been well down by half time, however, if it hadn’t been for the strength of Callum Owen who, against a team of fairly large boys, was so vital to our success. Strong tackles, fine throw-ins, and exocet missiles coming from his left foot …! It kept us in the game. George Augustin demonstrated good skill on the left and Tom Law always threatened. Rupert Brooks had his moments too, but is still under the weather …

The second half saw a Broadwater reserve team take over from their stronger team – if we’d have known they had 14 boys lined up, we’d have brought along another team – we’d have then have had two close matches. As it was things very quickly went our way in the second half. Rotating players lost us our shape and gifted Broadwater two goals (no more than they deserved) but overall this was a very pleasing performance!

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Creativity / Flair 8/10 With our two ‘4s’ using the wings well there was more finesse to our display.

Determination 8/10 Very good to see us all battling away, once again.

Finishing 8/10 We took our chances well, only missing speculative attempts.

Heading 6/10 We did OK, but didn’t need to head the ball too often in all honesty.

Marking 6/10 We just need to be a little more watchful at set pieces.

Passing 6/10 Super going forward, but the defence needed to link better with the midfield.

Tackling 6/10 Fine, but we were a little stand-off’ish’at times allowing them time on the ball.

Won – 4-2

This was a great encounter at Ashdown, thrilling watching with the ball travelling end to end and last-gasp heroics a plenty. Initially, all the pressure was created by Windlesham with some good passing in the opposition’s half and a couple of half chances for Lucas and Charlie Veale.  But, it was Ashdown that got the opener after our defence was caught knapping.  Charlie Veale equalised soon after Lucas’ deflected shot, and Lucas added another within minutes – a coolly taken shot past the keeper’s right hand boot. At 2-1 the game was on a knife edge and it took a rather unfortunate turn of events for Ashdown to equalise.  After Sam took a goal kick to George Hilton a very unlucky deflection off the knee played their striker in just at the top of the box, 2-2.  After a few changes by both teams there was a particularly purple patch for the boys with Charlie scoring from a goalie fumble and Lucas blasting home the fourth.

After half time it was a much closer affair with neither team adding to the score-line, although it was some staunch goal keeping from Nick Morris that really kept the scores the same as it was Ashdown that looked the more likely throughout. Charles Guy was superb in both attack and defence, contributing some excellent through balls and cancelling out Ashdown attacks with some great tackling. But, it was Keaton Brignall-Macdougall, Felix Dennis and Felix Bailey who came out of the second half with most to be proud of.  All of these players did themselves proud with their efforts and can be satisfied with a job well done.

L.Allison 2 – super play throughout!

Played on 29th September ‘10, at HOME.

Lost 3 –4 goals

Once again the boys played a good game of football, moving the ball around, passing constructively, and showing a lot of maturity and talent.  However, we just can’t achieve that elusive win.

Sandy Sutton played out of his skin during the first half, scoring 2 goals and being everywhere on the pitch.  He also played in goal for the second half, a tactical error on my behalf. Toby scored a good goal as well, and was solid in defence.  Oller Reed and Dan Beattie showed lots of promise for the future, looking up and passing out wide when they could.  Monty Wardle and Bertie Holwell both were solid in defence, and are growing in confidence all the time.  The surprise package for me is Freddie McGurk, who is competent both in defence and attack and strikes the ball well with both feet, a huge asset to any team.

The boys are developing into a very useful team, and they will improve with every outing.  Be proud U8s, you have done very well.

Team: Bea Corkhill, Poppy Clarke, Alice Lefever, Helena Pinchuk (C), Emily Ind, Cara Kernon, Georgia Myers, Heloise Wright.

The girls deserve much praise for today’s match. They played wonderfully, their behaviour was great and they listened to the advice offered to them during the intervals of the match.

After the first quarter it looked like it might be a close match, with Windlesham and Cumnor both scoring one goal each. However the girls picked up their play in the second quarter, scoring three goals to Cumnor’s zero. During the third quarter we scored another two goals, with each team getting another goal in the last quarter.

The girls’ defense was absolutely wonderful this match; Emily proved to be such an asset to the team, intercepting the opposition’s passes nearly every time they made it to the goal circle. Heloise and Georgia also played in defense and were just as good, which made it much easier for us to keep possession of the ball. In the last quarter Georgia went on as centre and was very impressive! Helena was also once again a wonderful centre. The shooters were also very good, with Poppy scoring four goals and Alice scoring three.

Player of the match has to be Poppy, not only for her beautiful shooting but also for concentrating on defense in the goal circle as well.

In order for the girls to improve their play they have to space out on the court instead of bunching up – they did try to do this towards the end of the match. The game also became a bit messy towards the end which could have been fixed by them simply keeping hold of the ball.

Nevertheless it was a brilliant game which the girls should be extremely proud of.

B team Won 8-1

With rain threatening from the start of the match conditions were not looking good for either team. Fortunately Windlesham started with real energy and conviction and a flurry of goals came through intelligent passing and strong vision. You played some attractive football and it was so pleasing to finally see both teams using width. A hat-trick from Larry Moir and Max Sutton really made life very tough for Ashdown who to their credit never gave up. Jasper managed to score the final goal due to his positional awareness, well done. As a team you all played really well and you must remember this winning performance.

Special mention to Max Sutton for his Hat-trick.

MAN OF THE MATCH LARRY MOIR- Well done !!

A team Won 4-1

Your football today was much improved from Saturday. Determination and thoughtfulness was evident due to your passing and your speed to the ball. Ludo,* you worked hard in both attack and defence which was good to see. Charlie Line took both goals extremely well, particularly the left footed one. Charlie Moodey-Stuart you captained your team with maturity and your two goals were very well worked. Please do not be afraid to use your voice more. Encourage your team as much as you can. Rory your hands continue to be very safe but try to command your area by using your voice. Your clearance kicks are much improved. All in all your team performance was really solid and your movement and wide passing was good to see. Possession is so important, well done !

Gaia Mizzi, Lolly Cross, Minna Howarth, Laura V-J ©, Amy Williams, Jemima Spurr, Esther Banks, Issy Woolvine, Monty Clevely,

This match was a real celebration of excellent team work, commitment and hard work. The team played some flowing hockey, demonstrating skilful stick work. The defence stayed strong and thwarted all but one of Cumnor’s attacks. Esther was ruthless in her scoring, hitting the back board at every opportunity. She scored 8 goals!! Laura scored a further 4 goals and Amy Williams scored a goal. The whole team played well. Gaia Mizzi kept her concentration in goal, despite not being called on for the vast majority of the game. She made one vital save late in the day.

Well played ladies, you deserve your victory! Next time, you must use the full width of the pitch.

WON   5 – 0 GOALS: C Sutton x2, Haines-Moss X2, Sayer

HT (3– 0)

Windlesham U9s burst back into action on Saturday with an exciting 5-0 win over Cottesmore.

Where they had been flat and lethargic in losing to Dorset House, every player came out bursting with energy and determination.  Even a lengthy wait for late opposition couldn’t curb the players’ enthusiasm and with Cosi Sutton pulling the strings, mixing skilful dribbling with visionary passing, Windlesham were straight on the offensive.  Linking telepathically with Haines-Moss as always, Windlesham surged into a 3-0 lead the dynamic duo responsible for both assisting and converting each of the goals with some superb interplay.

An enthusiastic and determined Cottesmore side raised their game after half-time, particularly in the defensive third where the physicality of the tackling certainly went up several notches, home captain Robbie Owen giving as good as he got in a series of bruising collisions.  Numerous positional switches and substitute rotations broke up the Windlesham fluency and made for an even third quarter in which young stars Fred McGurk and Sandy Sutton made an impact at both ends of the pitch.

However as the game entered its final phase  Windlesham got back to their passing game and with Hatrick and Sayer also boldly pushing on into the opposition box it was just a matter of time until the black and whites added to the score.  Sayer notched the fourth with quick reactions to beat everyone to the ball in a goalmouth melee.  The fifth came courtesy of the Sutton supply line, a mazy dribble from the right wing position leaving him in a position to secure a well deserved hatrick, only for a hugely impressive bit of unselfish to play to set up his brother in arms Archie Haines-Moss to convert and seal a deserved 5-0 win.  A special mention also to Myles Dismont-Robinson for making his goalkeeping debut in the second.  He may be learning the position, but his mighty goal kicks were a sight to behold!

From the changing room to the final whistle this was a much more energetic and enjoyable match experience for our U9 footballers.  Well done boys and keep it up.

Squad: Jack Sayer, Robbie Owen, Myles Dismont-Robinson, Archie Haines-Moss,

Ben Hatrick, Cosmo Sutton, Fred McGurk, Sandy Sutton.

U11 B v Cottesmore        Saturday 25th September 2010

Won 1-0

This was a hard fought battle of a match, with Windlesham always looking the more likely.  There was lots of good play both in defence and attack, with us looking the more likely to score all along, but the Cottesmore keeper was excellent and must have made at least eight saves in the first half! The danger was the Cottesmore counter which could have caught out the defenders at any point, but Will Kelley and Raph Richardson managed to stay goal-side of their marks and normally scramble any danger away.  Jasper Bowden was continually working hard up and down the right flank and he managed to get himself into a good position for a shot on numerous occasions. Max Sutton was the main play maker and worked exceptionally hard both in attack and defence.  On one of Cottesmore’s counters Sam Williams was called into action and pulled off a superb save to keep the game level.

In the second half we needed to be quicker to shoot and link up with other players with clinical passing.  Every player raised their game with Will Kelley in particular being impressive in defence.  Max Sutton continued his good work to feed Jasper, Hamish and Larry who fired off the most shots on target, but so far their keeper was equal to it.  Eventually the keeper blundered and delivered a goal kick right into Larry’s path who shot and even began celebrating when the ball hit the right hand post. Soon after a great save from Larry’s shot was parried into Jasper’s path who was able to scramble in the opening and only goal of the match.  The score remained the same as we held on for the win, despite some hairy moments in defence.

Scorer – Japser Bowden

Man of the match – Max Sutton – superb play across the pitch throughout the match.
